About the artist
Dion paints the people around him and the people who move him—family, friends, and the actors, musicians, and public figures who inspire his work—rendering every one of them with the same unflinching attention.
His work sits at the crossroads of classical portraiture and pop color: technically exact faces set against flat, saturated grounds that feel more like a stage than a background. The result is painting that reads as both a likeness and a mood—funny, proud, a little theatrical, always specific to the person in the chair.
Every piece starts as a photo—sent in by the person being painted, or by whoever's commissioning the piece—that Dion works from until the expression is right, not just the features. He started out in dry pastels and has moved increasingly toward oil on paper in recent years.
